Ghana is a state in West Africa bordering on the Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Togo and, to the south, the Gulf of Guinea as part of the Atlantic Ocean. Its area is almost as large as that of the United Kingdom, with whose history it is closely linked since the colonial era. The capital of Ghana is Accra, the second big city is Kumasi.
Ghana has achieved a higher level of prosperity in comparison to neighbouring countries (especially in the north). That is why many refugees from Togo, Burkina Faso, Liberia, Niger and Nigeria live there.
There is a big migration from the rural areas to the cities which leads to increasing unemployment, particularly among young people. That’s why especially young men migrate abroad, with the hope of finding work in Europe or North America.
Ghana's population has grown rapidly and has almost doubled within the last 25 years.
The Ghana Cedi (GHS) is the official currency of Ghana. 100 GHC are about 16 pounds (GBP). The average income is 70-100 £ per month. (450-600 GHS).
